What is an internship?

An internship is an on-site work experience that is either directly related to your major field of study or your career interest, in which the student apply their skills and knowledge in a professional setting, while gaining valuable skills for the future and seeing if a career is right for them.

What are the benefits of an internship?

An internship gives you the opportunity to:

            Gain valuable work experience before you graduate;

            Develop new skills and refine others;

            Apply knowledge gained from coursework to on-the-job situations;

            Reality-test tentative career choices;

Meet and work with professionals, establishing contacts for letters of reference and networking;

            Experience new work environments;

            Earn money for tuition and expenses.

When should I begin to search for an internship?

Internships are time-sensitive and the selection process is competitive.  Begin your search as soon as possible.  If you are planning to attend an internship in the summer you should start looking at possible internship as early as mid January.

Why should I consider doing an internship?

Internships give students the opportunity to gain professional experience prior to graduation.  You will be applying classroom training to real issues and problems, without having to commit to employment.  You will be building confidence in your work skills and networking with professional in your field.  The internship will strengthen your resume and often open doors to entry-level employment after you have your degree.

Are interns paid for their work?

Some are and some are not.  This is determined by the employer.  Salaries vary according to experience and skills required, year in school, type of position, type of employer and location.
